      Alpha Beta Chapter
Awfully Brutal History

04-05-1998

The story of this entity is the shared story of Latino-based greek organizations on the MSU Campus. In the early to mid-nineties as CRU (Culturas De Las Razas Unidas) was flourishing in the small yet productive Chicano-Latino community, many of the men active in the community took it upon themselves to begin a group founded on the ideals of Chicano-Latino male leadership and unity. The “Latino Mens Club” was formed as an outlet as
well as a haven for Chicano-Latino men to unite and bond.

Though a united group, the LMC was not recognized as anything more than just that: a registered group. So, many of he members sought to make their “club” official. They decided that this was a perfect time to implement something that was missing at MSU—a Latino-based/multicultural greek lettered organization. As they searched for an option, different opinions on different organizations arose. While some of the men decided to try other options, others still were not sold and decided to continue searching.

The journey for the Alpha Beta Chapter began in the fall of 1997. Many gentlemen from many backgrounds came together with an idea for something new at Michigan State University. When push came to shove, only ten men stood ready to face the challenge of being founders for what would become the Alpha Beta Chapter of Omega Delta Phi Fraternity, Inc.

After all obligations had been met, the men accepted with honor the title of Alpha Beta Colony of Omega Delta Phi Fraternity Inc. On April 5th, 1998, the founders received their letters as full members and brothers of what is now, the Alpha Beta Chapter.

Since then, we have accomplished much. We have produced graduates, teachers, steppers and community activists. All following lines/classes have been introduced to the Michigan State greek community through probates. Alpha Beta can boast about being the first Latino-based/multicultural organization in the nation that participates in bringing their newest brothers to the forefront by way of a probate. We have maintained our strong campus and local community presence as students and as leaders. Most importantly, we have also maintained the
strong ties that bind us as brothers. We welcome ANY MAN who isn’t afraid of challenges and who is willing to accept a diverse fraternal experience.

National History

In the fall of 1987, seven distinct men of vision:

Joe Cereceres
Eugene Dominguez
Arturo Barraza
Juan Barraza
Tommy Hurtado
Chris Forbes
Elliot Bazaan

came together at Texas Tech University to form a brotherhood.

The purpose of this Brotherhood, a Service/Social fraternity dedicated to the needs and concerns of the community, is and shall be to promote and maintain the traditional values of Unity, Honesty, Integrity, and Leadership. This Brotherhood was founded in order to provide, to ANY man, a diverse fraternal experience which coincides with a higher education.

Since founding in 1987, Omega Delta Phi has been an organization perpetually dedicated to the idea of constant growth and improvement. We must work to form an organization which not only challenges the traditional perception of fraternities, but also deals with the issues of culture and race in a completely new perspective. Thinking out of the box is no longer an acceptable plateau; the box must now be removed completely.
